35 Chapter XXXV: Talks on Alchemy

In Chapter XXXV, Brother R.—a former notable alchemist and recent Arhat—explains the exact nature of alchemy as the science of redeeming and transmuting matter through the discovery of the primordial substance. He, who in a distant past had been a remarkable alchemist, possessed a deep understanding of the laws governing the transmutation of matter. Whenever his duties in the Ashram allowed, he would speak to the disciples about the magical science of Alchemy. His words carried the authority of lived experience and the luminous simplicity of one who had already crossed the threshold of profound initiations.

“Alchemy,” he would say, “is an exact science, just like mathematics, geometry, or astronomy. In truth, all sciences arise from a single center. Mathematics emerges from the essential One; geometry from the point in space; astronomy from the immutable laws of gravitation and cyclic expansion, which are themselves expressions of a single creative Movement. The movement of the One generates the infinite succession of numbers until it reaches the celestial numbers, where the One becomes spiritual and cosmic, and movement is recognized as the root of all creation.”

He explained that geometry begins with a point, and from the succession of points arises the line, the surface, and the volume of geometric forms. Alchemy, however, concerns itself with the laws of transmutation—the redemption of matter—and for this the alchemist must understand pure ether, the primordial substance of all creation. Through the ages it has been given many names: primordial ether, the philosopher’s stone, the yellow lion, the elixir of long life, the Alkahest. Brother R. preferred the term Alkahest, for it was the name the Master used when teaching them the laws of molecular transmutation.

Everything that exists, he said, arises from a single point where the divine Intention and the creative energy converge. This Intention is the One of mathematics, the principle of all movement, the exaltation of the geometric point. Fundamentally, the Alkahest is the living essence of all creation. It is the primordial impulse that sets the creative movement in motion, the essential element behind every act of transmutation in Nature. The true alchemists of the past understood this. Some succeeded in isolating a portion of the Alkahest and held in their hands the power to transmute metals—and even their own spiritual lives. In the first case, they transformed silver, lead, or mercury into gold; in the second, they ennobled their lives to such a degree that they became centers of redemption for all impure substance and radiating points of immortal good.

This, he said, was only an introduction to the sacred laws of Alchemy. Yet even without formal knowledge of the science, every disciple had already acted as an alchemist, for each had transmuted the ignoble aspects of his life, burning the dross of karma in the crucible of personal experience. Initiation itself—received by some in past lives—is a transcendent alchemy set in motion by the Supreme Magician of the planet, the One Initiator, Sanat Kumara, when He touches the centers of the candidate with the flaming Diamond Rod.

One of the great secrets of Initiation is that, along with the solar electric fire, a specific quantity of Alkahest is poured into the chakras of the Initiate, introducing him into the transmuting movement appropriate to the degree received. No lengthy commentary is needed for the disciples to understand that transmutation is the great work through which the soul is born into physical life and through which it gains perception of the higher worlds.

Brother R. reminded them that each of them, knowingly or not, was already manipulating a certain amount of Alkahest entrusted to them at Initiation. Through this sacred substance they effected the necessary transmutations in their lives and in their surrounding environment. The magical power of Alchemy lies solely in the Alkahest. This is the great secret conquered by the true alchemists, who purified their lives until they discovered that the Alkahest was inseparable from their own essence. Only purity of action allows the Magician or Initiate to pour into the purified triple vehicle the sacred Elixir—the true Holy Grail—sought by countless seekers of the spiritual world.

On another day, while they awaited the Master, a brother who was a chemist in his outer life asked Brother R. what exactly the Alkahest was, for he had never perceived it in his studies of atoms and molecular compounds. Brother R. smiled gently. “You chemists,” he said, “are not yet what we call alchemists. Your instruments, even the most sophisticated, cannot yet penetrate the fourth dimension where molecular compounds are far more subtle. You have only vague notions of the four etheric levels of the physical plane. But the secret of the Alkahest will be discovered by chemistry when an initiated scientist perceives the mystery behind the conversion of etheric atoms into hydrogen atoms, the basic unit of the chemical elements.”

This mystery, he explained, and the constant transmutations within matter, are the work of the Alkahest. Wherever transmutation occurs, the Alkahest is present. Wherever the Alkahest is present, the Will of the Creator is active. Asked again what the Alkahest truly is, he replied: “It is the essence of life, the divine essence from which all creation springs. It is Light, Life, and Power. Its pure, incorruptible essence fills absolute Space, and from it the Logoi draw the quantity they need to animate their universes. The Will of the Logoi incorporates this essence and transforms it into creative movement. Thus, Alkahest lies at the foundation of all creative activity. It cannot be seen or touched, yet it is always there, energizing all wills and driving all movements. From the standpoint of evolution, Will, Movement, and Alkahest are synonymous—they are the centers of all possible transmutation in Nature.”

He urged them to purify their lives, for only in purity does the Alkahest dwell. “Purify yourselves,” he said, “transmute yourselves, and you will discover the Alkahest.”

Brother R., who not long ago received the Fourth Initiation and became an Arhat—a supreme candidate for Adeptship—spoke with a clarity and wisdom that echoed the Master’s own. His words illuminated the disciples’ understanding of the magical science of Alchemy and the profound mystery of Transmutation.

Keynotes

  • Alchemy as Exact Science: Brother R. defines alchemy as being as rigorous as mathematics or geometry. It is based on the movement of “the One," where all sciences converge in a single creative impulse.

  • The Alkahest (Universal Solvent): Also known as the Philosopher’s Stone or the Elixir of Life, the Alkahest is the pure primordial ether. It is the living essence of all creations and the fundamental element in every act of transmutation.

  • The Secret of Initiation: During initiation, Sanat Kumara applies the Flaming Diamond Rod, pouring a specific amount of Alkahest onto the candidate's chakras. This triggers the transmuting movement necessary for that specific initiatory level.

  • Alkahest as the Holy Grail: The author reveals that the Alkahest is inseparable from the individual; it is the "true Holy Grail." It can only be poured into the "cup" of a disciple's triple vehicle (physical, astral, mental) once it has been purified through action.

  • Alchemy vs. Chemistry: Modern chemistry is limited because it cannot yet penetrate the fourth dimension or the four etheric levels where molecular compounds are subtler. The "scientific" secret of the Alkahest lies in the conversion of etheric atoms into hydrogen atoms.

Summary

Concept Esoteric Definition
Alkahest The "blood of the Gods" and the pure essence of life, light, and power.
Transmutation The "Great Work”, through which the soul is born into physical life and reaches higher perception.
Arhat Brother R. The instructor for this chapter, who recently attained the Fourth Initiation.
The Requirement Pure action and life purification are the only ways to "discover" and utilize the Alkahest.

The "Scientific" Future

Brother R. encourages scientists to view alchemy as a guiding lighthouse. He predicts that the mystery of the Alkahest will be revealed to the world when a scientific researcher (acting as an initiate) discovers how etheric substance becomes the basic unit of chemical elements.
